in the wilderness, but last year under leadership of glen murphy, manna from heaven, the company got its act together. one of the few retailers with multiple successful concepts. not unlike limited and urban limited being strong too. we have gap, banana republic and old navy. these brands are being managed well with a focus on stocking stores with merchandise people actually like. i think the stock could have a big multiyear run ahead of it. mickey set it up, then some other guys took over, kind of ran it into the ground. murphy is bringing it back. i am not the only person who has noticed the changes. there was a terrific article in the company about the latest edition of "ad age," like the "wall street journal" of marketing. the title says it all "mind the gap retailer's fashion's brands resurgence. social savvy ads and a bit of good timing help retailer come back into style. i like the trades for ideas. that was a good one. beyond more appealing merchandise, gap is doing a number of things to grow the business. the company has been closing stores in the united states, it's opening new out

in the oil patch. it's a match made in heaven and it isn't being impeded by washington. if you bought it this summer instead of selling it, 25 points. not bad, right? or how about the reward yesterday with merkel buying atat alterra. it's a consolidation allowing merkel to grow. no one laughed when david did that chancellor merkel thing and no one laughed given. thank you. these deals have several things in common. first the acquiring companies aren't waiting for washington to rise above anymore. they're moving their stock and cash and putting it to work. the u.s. economy is simply much stronger than we thought just a few quarters ago. second, these deals show that there are ceos who are willing to give up or share their empires in order to make money for their shareholders. oh, cramer, these people are so rich. i know they're not sacrificing financially. that's not the point. the target ceos will all do well but these guys are empire builders. finally, even as the sale of the stock indicates in a symbolic way, these deals show the companies are listed -- that are listed themselves ar

from the time he was elected in 1942 until he died in hospital of emphysema in 1983. heaven -- eleven terms uninterrupted. and he -- that's the longest-running mayor of any city in the united states, and he was very proud of that achievement. he was part of this fantastic political machine which took power away from the republicans in 1921. and the key figure in that was an irishman, dan o'connell. there was four o'connell brothers x there were a couple of corning brothers, the father was one of them, and they founded the new democratic party, and they took the city back from the republicans that had run it since 1899. and when they took it in 1921, they never let go. it's still in power. the succession has been on through the deaths of the two people who were the key perpetuators of the machine. dan died, dan o'connell died in 1977, and erasmus six years later. and after that came tommy whalen who was appointed -- chosen as his successor by corning, and then now jerry jennings succeed ed tommy whalen, who died, who served for ten years and then quit. and then he, he was succeeded in
